Hard core comic book fans will always find something to gripe and groan about when movie studios take on their beloved characters. Case in point: Spider-man 3; bemoaned by many as a bloated tale that bit off way more than it could chew with the introduction AND demise of Venom, the overhaul of villains, the ever so tragic death of vengeance-seeking best friend Harry Osborn, the awakening of emo-Parker (OMG.. the hair! the swagger! the dancing! the emo-ness!), the long overdue debut of Peter Parker's first love: Gwen Stacy.. whom emo-Parker proceeded to use as pawn, parading her in plain view of MJ.. ANYhow, I ramble, but you get the point.
Regardless, I still found Spider-man 3 enjoyable. Maybe I'm not hardcore enough or maybe I'm just too easy to impress, but hear me through. By all means, it was in no way on par with its predecessors, but it was Spider-man; not Spider-man done right (Spider-man 2 takes that honor) or Spider-man done horridly wrong (perhaps emo-Parker could take that honor). At the end of the reel, it was simply Spider-man. Out of decades of stories penned, inked, & colored by countless talented writers & pencillers, Peter Parker sprang to life from the glossy pages of comic books to the silver screen not once, not twice, but three times. The elementary school kid inside of me couldn't help but revel in the illustriousness of it all. Did I care that it was flawed? No, not really. Did it bug me in the least? Maybe just a little bit, but I liked it.. really, I did. It transported me back in time to a period of childish wonderment & naivety, and that in it of itself was worth it.
..and so, as a new chapter in the Spidey saga is unfolding (and against my better judgment) I can't resist drawing comparisons between Raimi et al.'s interpretation of Spider-man and Sony's current reincarnation. As such, I present to you a new shot of the 2012 Spider-man suit (courtesy of Superherohype) alongside Tobey's old getup. Knowing the foolish juvenile within me, in spite of whatever doubts, criticisms, or ill-conceived notions that I may form or merely come across, when the last frame flickers across the screen in 2012 I have no doubt in mind that I'll be satisfied; it'll be spectacular, sensational, and dare I say.. Amazing.
